(photo from here)

Today I started to think about pumpkins.  Even thought it's the first of August tomorrow and pumpkins don't start appearing until around October I got a little bit excited, and thought 'I'm going to do even more things with pumpkins this year' (am an idiot).  Usually I just make pumpkin soup or roast pumpkins and eat them with salads. This year I want to try pumpkin with pasta and sage, pumpkin with pinto beans, spiced pumpkin tart, pumpkin gnocci, pumpkin fritata,  pumpkin bread and pumpkin biscuits.

(photo from here - the recipe isn't vegan but am sure we can sort that out!)

I get a bit excited about Autumn, pumpkins and halloween. August is generally my busiest month in work so I just start thinking about when it will be over (which is silly, because even though it's busy I still enjoy it).  Now it's summer I've been enjoying baby tomatoes with fresh basil and olive oil, salads and lots of summer vegetable pastas. The tomato is a nightshade... which I think makes it even more glamorous.

We've had a lazy day over here... making pizza, having a sneaky rosé, reading (Magazines, cookbooks and Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters for me, 'The Body of Jonah  Boyd' by David Leavitt for Bert) and watching Columbo.  I was thrilled to see such nice things said about my blog over on  Being of Sound Mind  too.  Hope everyone had a lovely weekend too.x

Today has been lovely. I have been reading this...

and it was quite the pageturner. I do like a campus novel with mean girls in it.

I sent Albert's quilt...

Bert added a caterpillar to the parcel...

yesterday I bought new books...

...and a new cafetiere as my last (cheap) one broke and I will not do without my coffee.

Today we bought cds from Spillers (the oldest record shop in the world)...

and went to Buffalo for beers...

and then headed to Chapter for the highlight of the day which was a cinema showing of LABYRINTH!!

I love the baby's little stripey romper suit! and I very much love David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King too.  As it says here, 'Bowie brings to the character his years of experience of sexualized strutting' I have decided to be mature here and not dwell on David Bowie's 'area'.

I would like this t-shirt.

After the joys of Labyrinth we had veggie burgers and chips

It was quite a meal as  you see, but I pretty much got through it all - apart from the salad of course.

Also bibbity-bob got the swap parcel I sent her today...

reading and listening to music tonight I think... xx

Sweet Potato

I think that the best way to eat sweet potato is baked in the oven and then served with vegan butter.  It's also delicious with salad and chickpeas as in this picture...

The chickpeas are cooked with onion, garlic, fresh tomatoes, sundried tomato paste and a bit of harissa paste and quite a bit of olive oil.

blogs...

Lovely Sian Lile Makes readers? I've had such nice comments (here and on my patchwork tutorial over at my pangaloon) recently! I keep saying to Bert - 'they are just being polite' but, recently been thinking 'hmm... maybe they like what I make!' Oh and I also have more followers! who'dve thunk it?

So, um. just wanted to say thank you, and also how much I've been enjoying blogging and reading other peoples blogs. Since starting to blog and doing more sewing I've felt lots more relaxed, and much more able to switch off from work when I get home.

Saying that, work has been quite busy recently and I've been creating some mood boards for inspiration over at pinterest.  I've been looking at geometric patterns... here are some of my favourites.

Creative space

A busy creative week here...

I've been experimenting printing with speedball and soft cut

the speedball (the top photo) is easier to work with.

I also finished Albert's baby quilt...

and finished a bag.

am linking up to our creative spaces - there are loads of beautiful handmade things over there.x

speedball/softblock printing

Am working on a new art and craft session for teenagers..(gulp), and am thinking of doing some printing with them based on 1950s patterns and designs.  I have been trying out speedball printing today - it's like lino printing but easier and I love it.

I thought we could try out some prints on paper and also give some a go on fabric and perhaps sneak a bit of sewing in there too.

beginning patchwork

I've written a guest post over at My Pangaloon about patchwork... maybe you'd like to go over there and read it??xxx

pink bag

I finished this bag yesterday. I love the colours and the contrast with the handles but the sewing isn't great and the handles are perhaps a bit heavy for the material. I haven't really got to grips with sewing by machine... I'm not sure if it's because the machine is old and not great or if it's just me, sewing by hand makes me feel IN CONTROL!!!!

flea market finds....

...a lovely single duvet cover which i'm going to cut up to make a picnic blanket...

go to Her Library Adventures for more finds!

New books....
Pasta with courgette, rocket and peas...

and Sadie being cute and sleepy...xx

this weekend I have lots of things to do... zumba, finishing bag, finishing quilt and filling in some forms... oh, also I've just finished Little Bird of Heaven by Joyce Carol Oates which I thought was amazing - the woman is a genius.x

Creative Space

Little Albert was born yesterday (bert's new nephew) so it meant I could embroider his name on his baby quilt and I also added a bit more stitching. Just need to do the binding now.

Vegan pizza with tahini

Ok, this is the last time (possibly) that I talk about pizza... I just got so excited about making dough that I've been making it nearly every week.... I've tried it with vegan cheese on it but it makes it a bit heavy, so usually I just make a fresh tomato sauce and then top the pizza with onions and roasted vegetables.

Last year at the End of the Road festival there was a stand that made pizzas including a vegan one with tahini on it... I am not a huge, huge fan of tahini but that tahini pizza was just delicious.

this is the pizza stand... I am near the counter in red

So this time I decided to add tahini to the mix....

 here is my awesome dough...

and this is the pizza when cooked. I put all the toppings on and then drizzled tahini mixed with olive oil over the top. I used the thin tahini but it was the end of the jar and a bit thick so that's why I added the olive oil, I don't think there would have been a need to add olive oil otherwise.

I was a bit nervous of the tahini because I find it can sometimes take over taste wise, but I think next time I would add more because it was totally delicious.  Tahini on pizza is the way forward.

10/10 weekend

Hello!  How was your weekend? ours was lovely... mainly because we both had the whole weekend off (it doesn't happen that often) and we could hang out.

Last night we went to the vegetarian food studio with the lovely Arabella and the lovely Rhys.

I forgot to take photos of the food... but here are some bowls...

the food was lovely, in particular the aubergine in garlic sauce... it is beyond delicious. Everything vegan is marked as such so you should all go there if you are in Cardiff.

It poured with rain on our (40 minute) walk home... but even that was nice.

This morning I went to the laundrette (our washing machine has broken), although no pictures of that I'm afraid. I quite like going to the laundrette, I find it quite glamourous (yeah, best not think about that too much), although I am sure the novelty will have worn off by week four.  Then we went to Chapter for lunch and had the most delicious roast dinner with sweet potato mash, mushroom and nut roast, roast potatoes, peas and gravy. Oh my. I also had 2 pints of Cropslasher and was super full...

a blurry dinner

 ...the teeth...the moonface....

now we are home and it's raining outside so we're all cozy inside listening to music.  Am not sure we'll ever eat again..... unless I make pizza later...x
