some music we've been listening to recently....

I haven't really listened to the Magnetic Fields in a while, but the
wonderful Shelley sent me a copy and I very much like this song.
I like this song from Hunx and his Punx...
I like a song that incorporates a telephone conversation.

I bought Gabby La La's album when I was in San Francisco.
I love it.
it's cute and it's funny (my two favourite things in music)
Bert bought Ekstasis by Julia Holter the other day and we love it.
(he also bought Sophie Ellis-Bextor today but he's on his own there)

that's enough for now! what have you been listening too?x

bed and a cushion

I have a new cushion.
It's so cute. I had to have it.
(it's from Marks and Spencers if you want one too)
and Sadie has a new bed!
it's a bed scratching post combo.
at the moment she even prefers it to her box.

I haven't done that much quilting recently, and last night I was thinking I must get back to it. I've got one quilt which just needs binding, a patchwork top that is finished but needs quilting (a bit of a big job that one, but one I must do!) and then about three or for others which are just the beginnnings of quilts.

Last night when I was thinking that I'd like to get back into it, I was thinking that I hadn't been doing anything craft wise at all... and then I realised that I'd been doing quite a lot of making - mainly cross stitch banners, and also planning lots of art and craft activities for work. Getting home from work I've just wanted to read and watch box sets with Bert...

Actually, the reading has been good.... The book in the photo above is called 'Knitting for Good' by Betsy Greer, and it talks about the importance of craft (not just knitting) in our lives, I haven't got that far into it yet, but any book that links craft with Riot Grrrl is fine by me.

Also, it's fine to have breaks right? I don't want any craft things I do at home to become a chore, I want them to be fun and relaxing.

Meanwhile, this afternoon there's another cross stitch banner making session... and maybe tomorrow I can get back to binding my quilt.x

some things to feel better to...

i've been sick for the last few days... i feel better now but toast is still the food of choice. while sick we watched the entire first series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, some Party of Five and some Streets of San Francisco.... oh, we also watched the movie The Crucible.. in which Winona Ryder is really naughty.
lots of people round here have been sick Here are some things to make you feel better if you are poorly too....

maybe some herbal remedies?
there's a whole list of them here where the picture was from too.
a cute cat ring to wear would pick anyone up I reckons....

Looking at nice things feels good too right?
beautiful images all found here

Everyone knows that craft makes you feel better...
I've been reading Betsy Greer's blog which has loads of great stuff on it (I've also just started reading her book knitting for good), I love the Secrets Of Nature collaborative embroidery project made with breast cancer patients.
it was started by Gisela Griffith who began embroidering when she was suffering from breast cancer herself. She began embroidering plants that the drugs themselves came from... she found it relaxing... and got other patients embroidering too!  read more about Gislela here.

tah-dah! tofu and caramelised onion pie

what are your thoughts on tofu?
I really like it but it's only in the last few years that I've learnt to cook with it properly (or you know, so that it tastes good). I think when people say they hate tofu (and feel free to correct me!) is when they just have slabs of it just cooked without anything added and it just tastes really bland... but I love it scrambled, marinated in soy sauce and ginger, made into a fritatta with potato and onion, blended with lemon and sugar to make a lemon cheesecake and so many other yummy things!

Yesterday I made a tofu and caramelised onion pie and it was really delicious... a little bit quichey I suppose....

so, wanna know how to make it?
it has a pastry base which I blind baked first (although am not sure how necessary that was) and layered it with caramelised onions and then put the tofu mix on the top and then baked for about twenty minutes.

for the onions I just sliced up about 8 onions and cooked on a low heat in vegan butter and olive oil and a little sugar for about twenty minutes or so until they were soft and brown.

the tofu mixture was silken tofu blended tother with some soy milk, nutritional yeast flakes, turmeric and salt and pepper. It was quite thick - kind of a double cream consistency.

it's pretty simple and I ate it with salad.

Am linking up with Lakota's ta-dah tuesday because I think it's only right to share my pie news....also Lakota has made some mocha squares which look delicious.

dinner time

potatoes and shallots baked in the oven with tomatoes, salad and bread.

noodles made by bert with tofu and fake duck

salad with pomegranate and some potato and courgette fritters.
I got the recipe for the fritters from the new Simple things magazine... tho they had eggs and I left that out - I went for grated courgette, mashed potato, flour, baking powder, no-egg and some vegan parmesan.

pasta with a fresh tomato and basil sauce
pizza with roasted peppers...
and pizza with vegan sausage
and this is the vegan sausage! we've been putting it in everything, eating it straight from the pack or cooking it by frying it or roasting it with vegetables.
pretty exciting huh?
