pale pink, pale purple

I went to Ikea today to get some fabric for work. Today was not a good day for fabric in Ikea... sometimes they have amazing fabrics, but today, not so much - I got two spotty fabrics and I might try them again in a couple of weeks. They did have one fabric which I LOVED... but it was out of stock, boo! I'm going to have a look on line to see if I can find it.

The last thing we need in our cute little flat is another blanket or some glasses....

...oh, but when Ikea sells such pretty blankets and cups as these.. who can resist? the colours are dreamy.

I got these books today. I've read Eat Pray Love before and I loved it. I also love the film (hello Javier Bardem!). Anyway, I borrowed it from the library before and wanted my own copy... and the one next to it is written by one of the guy she met in italy named Luca Spaghetti (his real name). The yoga one next to it looks really good - can't wait to read it...I've been pretty obsessed with yoga this week.

A little while ago I bought this scarf from obellaorganics it's one of those circle/infinity scarves and I love it so much... here I am wearing it!

I also quite fancy this vest that she has for sale...

...maybe after a bit more yoga huh?

quinoa

Quinoa! what are your thoughts on quinoa? my main thought is that it's not as yummy as couscous, but it is way better for you! why? because couscous is wheat based and quinoa contains iron and calcium and is a complete protein! yes! and I don't really know what that means... but it does feel lighter to eat... and actually it does taste good and a little nutty. Maybe I just need to eat more of it....

But what to make with it? I went with roasted vegetables and quinoa. I roasted red peppers, red onion, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. I roasted them in canola oil and sprinkled smoked paprika and salt over the top, when they were nearly done I crushed some garlic and mixed that in too. Once it was all cooked I added the cooked quinoa and lots and lots of fresh parsley.

this is it catching the sun...

ate it with brocolli cooked with sesame oil, sesame seeds and soy sauce
and the chick pea dip from yesterday.

What else could you make?
looking online it mainly seems that people make salads out of quinoa... but over on the awesome http://www.101cookbooks.com/ (again) you could make....

quinoa cloud cookies!

quinoa with tempeh and mushrooms

big bowl of quinoa with potatoes, nuts, asparagus and lots of other good things.
really, go look at  Heidi's website... so much good stuff.

lovely.
day off today... am just looking on the internet and drinking coffee (have eaten my cereal and blueberries with almond milk - be impressed - I am, as a rule, not a cereal eater) and will be going for a swim as soon as my costume dries... (damp swimming costumes just take me back to childhood and swimming club - maybe I should just buy a second swimming costume).
the sun is still out today! am going to meet a friend later for coffee in the park and maybe a bit of yoga this evening.

chick peas two ways

I think that chick peas are my favourite bean/pulse/whatever they are.
I like making hummus, or just frying them with garlic, fresh herbs and lemon juice.
the chick peas on the right of the picture are roasted chickpeas. I've tried roasting chick peas before and wasn't wild about the result, but these ones were slightly different.
You just put cooked chick peas on a baking tray and put in the oven for about 10 minutes... then cover them in a mixture of lemon zest, olive oil, smoked paprika and salt and put back in the oven for another few minutes.
They are nice, but still not my favourite thing ever. They are good to snack on though and I imagine they would be good sprinkled over a salad.

The chickpeas on the left are more like hummus... it's really good!
blend about half a tin of chick peas with some lemon juice and then add the other half a tin of chick peas whole. Add some finely chopped red onion, fresh herbs (I used parsley, recipe used dill), mix together mustard, yogurt (I used soy) and salt, add to the chick peas and stir.
It's lovely - a bit lighter than hummus and with a nice texture too.
both of these recipes were adapted from Heidi Swanson's amazing book - 'Super Natural Every Day', go visit her blog for more deliciousness.

In other news, it's hot right? wowsers. I went swimming this morning which was lovely, and now am indoors with the fan on.
Did you watch Eurovision last night? is this something that people who are not in Europe watch? is it something that people in Europe watch? I love it....my friend Rhys had a party, so we went round to his house to watch eurovision (there was marking the acts too) , drank cava and tried to befriend his newish cutie-pie cat Minnie Moon.
more swimming tomorrow I think. are you keeping cool?

some good things

I continue to obsess over the new Beach House album. I particularly like this song:

I have discovered that you can get 'Labyrinth', 'The Last Unicorn' and 'Hellboy' perfume oils from here

the 'Hellboy' one smells of aftershave, candy wrappers, brimstone and cat. Which sounds wonderful!

the jareth perfume oil smells of' 'Ethereal lilac fougere (?) and gleaming leather with ti leaf, tonka absolute, white musk and oudh'
yep, gleaming leather
I've started reading this:
it's written by Jenny Lawson who blogs here... she got a book deal based on her blog. where's my book deal? aren't we all going to get book deals? I'm not sure what I'd write about in my book though.....what would your book based on your blog be about?  So far Jenny hasn't listed her favourite things once!

sunday cd buying

we went cd buying this morning - got the new Beach House, Frankie Rose and Lucy Wainwright Roche.
Haven't listened to them that much yet... but Beach House sounds great.

also reading 'Bad Marie by Marcy Dermansky - it's good, but after this and James Sallis's 'Drive', next I want to read something NICE.

Watching movies - 'Solstice' and 'Bandslam'. Last night we went to see 'Vegucated' about becoming vegan - it was pretty powerful stuff, you should watch it. (well, you know, if you'd like to...but I thought it was really good)

making roasted butternut squash and beetroot salad.

bad days and sandal socks

look at my new socks! they are sandal socks. bert got me them yesterday... i am a little embarrassed to admit that he bought me a gift because i changed sadie's litter tray (it's not my job!).  They look a little grubby tho don't they? sorry about that.

today has not been an amazing day... it started with bert locking me in the flat and leaving his keys in the door... actually that didn't bother me too much... I am happy to be locked in drinking coffee.... but it meant i was late for work.  At work I was headachey and tired and am glad to be home...am making pasta and drinking wine and waiting for bert to come home and reading some crime! (am not huge on crime, but am reading Drive by James Sallis as he is doing a reading in Cardiff next week).

there has been a bit going on round here... we went to some short story readings in the bay... me and my sister went to see my aunty eva who is sick (she's 101!), and it's knitting tomorrow in work.... and maybe a movie in the evening....

what are you up to?

craftivism

I made this!
It's a protest banner which translated from the Welsh means somethng along the lines of 'asylum seekers are looking for a safe place'
I have never done any cross stitch before - and am not even sure this counts, does it? I'm kinda proud of myself, though realise I should have made the 'l's' a bit taller....
anyways, the reason I made this is because the craftivist collective are coming to the museum where I work to run a workshop with us. It would be really lovely if any of you Cardiff people could come! Let me know if you need any details.

(am linking up with Lakota's ta-dah tuesday, go check it out!)

sneaky afternoon off

Hello!
I feel like I have been in work A LOT recently (including the last two weekends), so today I decided to have the afternoon off. On the way home from work I nipped in to Marks and Spencers for afternoon off essentials - red wine, bloody mary flavour crisps (which I am delighted by and repelled by in equal measures), and this really amazing roasted butternut squash dip they've started doing.

So, sofa afternoon of reading (got 'Lilac Mines' on the go at the moment), watching bad tv and listening to music just like this....

(on an unrelated note I have the worst eczema on my right hand at the moment - I'd show you a picture, but it's far too gross - any tips other than never washing up again?)

sticky fingers' sweets by doron petersan

Bert got me a new vegan baking book!

and so I looked at it and I knew I wanted to make sticky buns... or cinammon swirls... because I kind of miss things like that as a vegan...

and so I put aside two days of my life (really, you need two days, mix stuff, let it prove for 20 mins, mix stuff, let it rise for an hour, mix stuff, leave it overnight, roll out and slice, let prove for an hour and then bake!) and I made them. Actually, even though at one point it said to leave overnight... I just kind of left it for about 7 hours... which I think is probably the same.

Here they are! hello sticky buns!

oh gosh! nice huh?
I did have a couple of issues with the recipe (although they turned out delish), at the beginning it says about mix together and leave the ingredients to bubble, bubble? my mixture was solid! and then it asked for a particular amount of flour which seemed to be about a cup and a half too much - so I left that bit out, and then at the end for the icing it called for 3 cups of sugar when one and a half seemed to do.

I shall let you know about my further sticky fingers adventures... I have my eye on the whoopie pie chapter.

any thoughts on communes?

Would you want to live on a commune? I kind of do - but only in the 1960s, and maybe as a child....
I'm reading Arcadia by Lauren Groff at the moment which is a novel set in a commune in the 70s. I'm really enjoying it so far (although bert has already read it and wasn't keen on the second half) especially the character of a child called Bit (he's just a 'little bit')  who is just the sweetest little boy ever. I love how Groff writes about this quiet little boy... looking for warmth and cuddles and struggling to speak.

It has a lovely cover doesn't it? I have a different version from the book above...
Bert has also just bought 'Little Miss Strange' by Joanna Rose too...

looks good huh?
am also planning on reading 'Drop City' by T.C. Boyle....

I love this picture, it looks so beautiful and peaceful. It's from Drop City in 1968.

another photo of Drop City taken by Clark Richert. These domes were inspired by Buckminster Fuller. There was a period of my life where I was pretty obsessed with wanting to build a geodesic dome...I actually went to an interview to get on to an MA course in London and told them that I wanted to build a glass dome.... I was not accepted.

Here's a film about Roberta Price and her experiences photographing communes in New Mexico and Colorado in the late 1960s.

friday favourite things

friday goodness.

all made out of folded paper by eva black

by ignacio torres... dreamy.

I bought the black belles cd yesterday. I love it... and I love their look and the witchy imagery they use.

A really nice sun print here. I keep meaning to do a little sun print tutorial for you guys... but it's been raining a lot recently.

I found these over on The Dainty Squid... I mentioned in my last post I was looking for some cloud fabric and haven't found any... maybe I could make cloud cushions instead?  these look snuggly....

I've been making something similar to the above today...I followed the tutorial on this enchanted pixie.  I'm working this weekend and am thinking of making these with the children that swing by the museum.
