yoga treat

Recently I have been going to hot yoga classes and I really love them. Now, the regular classes seem a little weird (and cold)... although I am still going to those too. Anyway, there is sweating involved in hot yoga, quite a bit of sweating... the mat gets slippy and you need to take a towel. My towels are not that fancy... some of them have ducks on them... so I kind of feel a bit funny about taking my towels to hot yoga even though the lighting is subdued (it's actually just the soft red glow of the heaters).

But it's ok! Bert got me a yoga towel/mat thing as my pay day gift!

and it's so pretty!
and look! it has those little dots on the back so it will stick to your mat!
I haven't used it yet, but am looking forward to turning up at yoga and unrolling it....
do you go to hot yoga? what do you wear? do you have a fancy towel?x

stomach ease tea

I love this Stomach Ease tea.
It's got fennel, coriander, liquorice, peppermint and cinnamon in it, but the main thing you can taste is cardamom.  I love the taste of cardamom. Also, they only other time I think I've eaten cardamom is in a cake in Green Man festival, so drinking this tea almost makes me feel that I am sitting in the sun, eating cake and listening to music.
Each teabag has a little message on the tag.
last night's one said:
"Just do not let someone fall."

making shields...

We are spending two days making shields in work... we've made the cardboard shields beforehand and then the children can decorate them with iron age designs....
this one is extreme

this one has a great design

this one has been properly designed on paper first and then worked up on to the shield itself

and this one is just gorgeous.
she obv had no time for the iron age.

summer foods

What do you eat in the summer?
It's been so hot here... we just want light foods and small portions... and cold white wine (that's just me - bert is practically straight edge)
The above is couscous with peas, mint and spring onions. It's my new favourite thing and quick to make.
I have also been continuing on my burger adventures.

This time I made them with mashed sweet potato and chick peas, some wild rice and some onion, ginger, garlic and chilli.
they were good.
These are not quite the burgers you are looking for though asparagus pea but I shall work on the perfect bean burger for you.x

a samphire off

We had a samphire off. (we hadn't really cooked with samphire before, so we weren't sure what was going on) Actually, it was a samphire, asparagus and tofu off. Same ingredients, same place, different chefs. My dish is the top photo, Bert's is the one below.
I went with roasted asparagus and a little lemon, my samphire was cooked slightly and then fried with shallots and vegan butter and nutritional yeast flakes, and the tofu was marinated with soy sauce, maple syrup, ginger, garlic and chilli.
Bert parboiled his asparagus and samphire and then fried them with lots of vegan butter and lemon. He made a tofu scramble with spring onions. Man, that scramble was the business.
Anyway, it was officially decided by us that it was a draw, although I think maybe Bert's samphire was a touch better.
Have you had samphire? It's good, but I find that if it's just boiled or steamed it has a texture that I am not happy with (possibly a bit like a fleshy cactus).

sewing project

me and my work life and real life buddy sara have been working on a sewing project together.
we are sewing little banners about women who we admire.
we are sewing their names, or cross stitching their names and we are sometimes sewing their portraits.

this is just the beginning. we are going to sew so many!
and then show them somewhere and then invite people to sew their own banners too.

we were inspired by this banner which was made in 1908 by an unidentified designer.
It's a suffragette banner that would have been used on protest marches.

what do you think of our project so far?
what women should we add to it?
who inspires you?

vegan mushroom burgers and red cabbage slaw

how do you feel about mushrooms?
I have mixed feelings.
I quite like them raw and I really liked them fried, but fried HARD so that they are almost crispy and possibly charred.
What I don't like is that in between bit where they get squishy and almost snail-like.
Sometimes if you have breakfast out they almost taste boiled. is that a thing? boiling mushrooms?
because that is DISGUSTING.
But I do like mushroom flavour and I also like mushroom burgers!
following another recipe from the burger book bert bought (all the b's)
I made Mushroom burgers with portabello, shitake and chestnut mushrooms, along with some potato and some barley, thyme and balsamic vinegar.
and then I went ahead and made a red cabbage and mint slaw.
and it was all good.

work things....

here's a picture of a little making stall I ran in a school fayre.
I got big time sun burnt on my arms.
It had been cold and rainy all morning, so mainly I was concerned with being too cold outside with my yarn and stuff... but by the afternoon it was boiling and my stall was in a regular little sun trap. I had also forgotten to take water with me and all they were selling was tea and instant coffee (I do not like instant coffee)... but an hour in I was so dehydrated I had to spend 30p on a black instant coffee....
a little later they finally brought out the water.
It's a good story.
and actually I quite like visiting schools and sewing in the sun.
really, I've been doing lots of work things - if you'd like you can read my work blog over here
This past week has gone really quickly, Bert went away for a few days and left me and sadie-cat to fend for ourselves. we mainly watched tv that bert doesn't approve of... and went to yoga.
